Releasing an Album (Post)-COVID

The past year and a half changed us in ways we couldn’t imagine. In the throes of post-production for an album we recorded in the summer of 2019, March 2020 felt like the end of the world. Now, without engaging in too many more cliches, let’s just say our timeline got derailed.

But as people and as artists, isolation and the forcible pause in our busy lives as freelance musicians offered an opportunity to simply stop. To stop planning, stop mindlessly gigging, and begin to dig deeper into the parts of our lives we had been neglecting. We both found solace in the outdoors, in the freedom to explore hobbies (a foreign word to many working musicians), and began to enjoy a new pace of life.

When the wheels for this album finally started turning again, we’ll be honest, it brought up some uncomfortable feelings: shame for not getting it done sooner, dread of embarking on it once again, and the strange distance we felt from the people we were when it was recorded. It sometimes felt disingenuous working on a project that no longer felt representative of where we were as artists.

But now with all our t’s crossed and i’s dotted, we feel a deep sense of pride in this album and gratitude for all the people along the way who made it possible. As a snapshot from before everyone’s lives changed forever, it can serve as a reminder of the beauty that endures time, and a jumping off point as we all ask ourselves, “Where do we go from here?”.

Mercurial is a gift to everyone who supported us and believed in us throughout this project, and is dedicated to all those pursuing an artistic life. May we build something better than we had before.
